RTI Guidelines

How to File RTI

  • Submit application in writing or through electronic means
  • Provide clear subject matter of information sought
  • Pay prescribed fee through DD/IPO/Cash
  • Attach proof of BPL status if applicable
  • Ensure complete postal address for communication

Fee Structure

  • Application Fee: ₹10
  • Document Copy (A4 size): ₹2 per page
  • Inspection of Records: First hour free, ₹5 per hour after
  • CD/DVD: Actual cost
  • No fee for BPL category applicants

Time Limits

  • 30 days from date of receipt
  • 48 hours for information concerning life and liberty
  • 35 days if application transferred to other public authority
  • 40 days if third party information is sought
  • 45 days for human rights violation information from listed agencies

Frequently Asked Questions

What information can be obtained under RTI?

Any information held by or under the control of the institution except information exempt under Section 8 of the RTI Act.

How long does it take to get information?

Information is provided within 30 days of receiving the application. For matters concerning life and liberty, information is provided within 48 hours.

What if information is not provided in time?

You can file first appeal to the First Appellate Authority within 30 days of the expiry of the prescribed time limit.

Is there any fee exemption?

Yes, applicants belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) category are exempt from paying any fee. However, proof of BPL status must be provided.
